5 Tips for a Successful Night’s Sleep

Are you tired of always lying in bed every single night, tossing and turning, and trying to stay awake the following day? I know, I get tired of doing that on a nightly basis, but what if I told you, that you no longer had to endure such pain in your life anymore? You may want to consider trying these five  tips to help you get a great night’s sleep.

Get some exercise

Everyone always says exercising always makes everything better, which is 100% true. However, if you  exercise during your daily routine, you will see a huge difference in the amount and quality of sleep you will get each night. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to go off and run five miles a day either. Even just going out and walking together with your spouse or kids after dinner can also be considered exercise.

Cut out caffeine

Now, I am not saying to go cold turkey either. We know how well that goes, don’t we? It is one thing if you are a coffee lover and drink coffee in the morning and a few caffeinated drinks throughout the day; however, when it starts getting later into the evening, try and cut those beverages out. This is a pretty common reason why you may be having a hard time getting a good night’s sleep.

No work allowed in your bedroom

This one is a huge one. It may not seem as huge as the others, but it really is. I will be the first to announce, I do work from my bedroom. I don’t follow this one at all. Do I suffer from this? Yes, I do.

If you work at home like myself, then you know how stressful it can be. Working in your bedroom usually means you don’t have a home office,  or you feel more comfortable in your room. Well, for starters, if you are completing stressful tasks including paying your bills, dealing with taxes, or just plain old working that you can’t seem to get away from, you may want to try and move that portion of your life into your living room or kitchen. You should always try and keep your room for sleeping and sleeping only.

Keep your phone off

At night, you should always try to keep your bedroom free of your electronics. I know most people now use their cell phones as alarms, which is perfectly fine, but instead of having it on vibrate or loud, turn it on silent. Yes, turn it on silent and put the screen facing down, this will eliminate you from trying to check your phone to see if work contacted you, emails, and text messages.

Get into a routine

I know sometimes we tend to go to bed at random times, but if you establish yourself a bedtime like your parents did when you were growing up. Your body will get used to going to bed at that certain time, which will allow you to get tired. Of course, you won’t be able to go to bed at that time all the time, due to different events going on during your life. However, as long as your stick to that schedule 90% of the time, you will see a huge difference in your sleeping schedule.

Just by following these five tips, you will be on a way to a better night’s sleep. Just remember to always take out any and all distractions that may be in your bedroom before you head to bed. You want your room to be for sleeping not a place to worry about everything that happened that day or what will happen in the future.

Take a Mental Health Day

This is a huge problem that a lot of people have. Whether you work from home, or work outside the home, chances are great that you may need a break from your schedule. Some call it a personal day, while others call it a mental health day. Whatever way you may call it, it should be your day, the day you can spend embracing yourself and no one else.

Does it sound too good to be true? That’s because we have a tendency to cling to our responsibilities with a death grip. Somehow, many of us have decided that the world would stop spinning if we dropped out of it for a few hours. Try taking a one day break, and when no catastrophe ensues, you’ll see just how valuable a personal day can be.

Make a day for you

Make certain that everyone knows you’re taking this day. Request it off from work, get a babysitter for the kids and make alternative arrangements for meals. This is just one day. You can do it, and your family can function without you for a few hours.

Leave the phone home

If you are like me, you probably are always checking that phone of yours. For your own sake, leave the phone home. Yes, some clients may get back to you, or their other things that need to be done. However, they will be there tomorrow. You don’t need to worry about them today. All you need to do is worry about yourself.

Plan your day

Now this plan can be simple if you choose, or elaborate, if you so choose. However, the main thing to take away from this is do what you want. Do something that you want to do that will being you happiness. If you are racking your brain for some suggestions, here are a few:

Lay on the couch and binge watch some television. Get take out, snacks, and other food that you normally don’t eat on a daily basis.

Call up a friend and see if they want to see a movie, go shopping, or even have a nice lunch. It is something you normally won’t do, but it will be nice to have some human interaction.

Have a spa day. Grab an appointment at your local spa for a massage, facial, or just a mani-pedi. Doesn’t matter what you choose as long as you are happy.

By taking a mental health day, you are rediscovering your self-worth. Not only that, but you are taking all the stress you have built up over time and letting it go. Everyone needs a day to relax, unwind, and be themselves. Always plan for a day to do what makes you happy without having work and stress get in the way.

Stay cool, calm and collected

I can easily guarantee that half of your parents told us to stay cool, calm, and collected at least once in our life. The emotions you feel when you are angry, upset, and mad can negatively impact our positive mental attitude. Of course, there is nothing wrong with letting out our emotions, but you have to keep them in check. You have to understand and take full responsibility for your own actions.

Love yourself

I know this is a heard one for me to do. Everyone gets annoyed, upset, and mad over the things you do, the way you look, and the choices you made throughout life. However, loving yourself will bring you one step closer to gaining a complete positive mental attitude. Loving yourself will allow you to be in a much happier place, not to mention, you will be much more confident and reflect a positive attitude no matter what situation may arise.

Keep your work at work

This can be a tough one if you work at home like myself. You need to keep work during your work designated hours. That means, no checking work email, no bringing work home, and once work is done forget about it. I know the feeling all too well because sometimes you feel as if work never ends, but it truly does. The moment you can break away from work, will be the moment you will feel much better.

Relaxation techniques

Relaxation techniques are perfect for you when trying to achieve a positive mental attitude. You can get yourself into yoga, pilates, hypnotherapy, and meditation. Just by joining a group or even doing it by yourself will help you feel much more relaxed. I recommend doing this after a stressful day, or before you head off to work.

There are many more different ways that you can gain a positive mental attitude; however, some ways will be easier to do than others. You just have to learn to take your negativity out of your life.

Well, it seems like some people speak of happiness like it is a choice. However, in a sense this is true. You are the only one that can make you happy.  It is completely your choice if you choose to be happy, or not.  Nonetheless, building a habit of choosing to reminisce on the good things in life is an excellent way to strengthen your positive feelings.

On the other hand, some people speak of happiness as a state that occurs when they are doing the things they enjoy and love. You can use this approach to happiness; there is no issue with that because it brings the good things in your life as a positive action.

Therefore, there is one vital thing that both of these approaches share: they both concentrate on your mind during the present time.

I know being in the present is not always easy, but that is where the happiness will come from. We all have our own demons we are fighting, but you cannot live in the past or future.  The past may have some awesome memories, but how can they help you now? Not to mention, the future, may look dreadful, if you are in a sticky situation, but does that stop you from being happy?

Your imagination is a powerful tool. Your mind comes up with an infinite number of possibilities of where we should be, where we need to be, and everything in between. However, at the same time, these scenarios can bring stress, pain, and sadness into our lives. Instead of allowing your mind take control, it is time you take control. Look around, count your blessings, and immerse yourself in your life now. Live for today, look at all of your accomplishments and failures. At the end of the day, do what brings you joy and happiness.

When you have this negative mindset, you are only setting yourself up for failure. You need to take out all the negativity and bring in the positivity. Even if your work does not seem the way you want it, take a step back, doing something else and return. Always, always, always, return with a fresh mind and eyes.

Keep Your Expectations & Goals Realistic

This may be a hard one for many. Most of us have full-time jobs and write on the side. With that and our other daily demands can make it hard on our writing career. You always want to sit down review the goals you set for yourself and change them accordingly to the time, schedule, and demand that you have. Once you found your perfect schedule, stick to it and you will slowly see the rewards it will bring.

Find the Balance

This sort of goes with the above point; finding a perfect balance will help a lot. You want to have time to write and to have time for yourself. Without having any “me” time, you are essentially always on the go. When you are always on the go, it causes stress, fatigue, and bad moods. You want to avoid this at all costs. You want some time to recharge and feel like you are human.

Good Night’s Sleep

You don’t know how many writers I have spoken to, who say they don’t sleep or they sleep very little. Are you crazy? Sleep is very much needed, no matter what profession you are in. Getting a good night’s sleep helps you recharge and gets you going for your next day of work.

Before you get career burnout, you will need to take control of your life. Make a schedule, set goals that can be easily attainable, focus on what is good in life and not the bad, and most importantly take care of you. There is no reason why you should feel burnt out when you are doing something that you love the most.

We tend to go through our life fast pace without stopping occasionally to take in our surrounds. You will be surprised with how many little things we truly missed. We are so caught up with getting from point A to point B that we don’t take a walk through the park, visit the library, or better yet take a relaxing family vacation. We truly need to stop rushing through life and do these little things that we don’t realize we are missing. You will be surprised at how much more enjoyable life can be when you take things slow.

Always remember to take time to learn something new, stop and smell the roses, and get out there and meet new people. Most of the time, they come to us because they feel guilty of writing too much for what little money they get. We all know that feeling; at least I do first hand. You get paid a small amount for a piece that could take weeks to write. You start telling yourself why? Why do you keep doing this day in and day out? Does this sound familiar to you? For some, thinking of writing as your calling can ease the guilt. No one can feel guilty about spending time doing something that they’re destined to do. If you are supposed to be writing, then write. Go ahead, don’t worry about the time it takes you to complete a project. Writing is more than a paycheck to some, writing is knowledge, a creative outlet, and can bring tremendous joy.

Making a list of long-term and even short-term goals can be helpful no matter what you do in life. A perfect example of a short-term goal is perfecting grammar. While on the other hand, a long-term goal could be finishing a book. The main point of this is, by making a list of both long-term and short-term goals and working through the list, you will be able to notice that there will be no wasted time. With each item you cross off your list, you should be proud of yourself for your accomplishments. Once you finish the first list, start making a second one, which should keep the guilt away.

Don’t be scared to tell people that you are a writer. If you are anything like me, your work has appeared throughout the internet.  So, my question to you is why would you spend so many hours trying to be a writer when you already are? You are a writer; why try to keep it a big secret. You should be proud that you are a writer, if someone doesn’t like that you are a writer, so be it.

I know a lot of writers that think just because they are a writer; they are not as productive as the next person. Sadly, that is wrong, Wasting Time Survey conducted a study by Salary.com, a typical employee will spend about 1.7 hours a day on nonproductive activities, including surfing the net, taking long breaks, and socializing. Now, you are probably asking what makes you different? For starters, writers usually don’t have coworkers to distract us. Besides not having coworkers, the process to write takes time, which means we tend to make good use of every hour in our day. In hindsight, it doesn’t matter if it takes us hours to construct a perfect paragraph, because we are being productive. When you compare yourself against the typical employee, you have no reason whatsoever to feel guilty.

One last thing, remember how your teachers would always say “persistence pays off?” It definitely applies to writers too. Not only will all your hard work and dedication make you a stronger writer, but you will also be gifted with respect and confidence; which in return will increase your chances tremendously becoming successfully published over and over again. Now it is time to get rid of all your guilt and get back to your production work. It is officially time to write your heart out!
