Writers: Career Burnout

Today, we are going to talk about a topic that many writers, even us, deal with on a daily basis. Career burnout is a real thing. We sadly face these challenges quite often because we put forth high and unrealistic expectations that end up going bad.

In reality, we don’t get that writing shouldn’t need to have these high expectations. As you know, the writing process takes time, work, and self-discipline to be successful. Of course, this entire process tends to get us down in the dumps, and we feel as if we are not good enough.

How To Know If You’re Suffering Writing Burnout

Let’s get this out in the open first; burnout is not the same as writer’s block or procrastination. We all have those days where we rather be a couch potato. However, if you are constantly avoiding your work, suffering from aches and pains, and feeling a bit disillusioned, you may be feeling the side effects of career burnout. Now, before you decide it is time to toss your laptop out the window or run it over, please consider the following.

Success & Failures

What writers tend to do more so than others , is letting their failures and successes define who they are. We believe every rejection is just another nail in the coffin. In reality, we should never let that happen. We should know that not every article or book was accepted the first time. The best writers are the ones who keep going even when they get a rejection.

Be Positive

I’ve talked to many writers, and even have writers hire us for work they think doesn’t A.) look good B.) is a piece of garbage and C.) they can’t take it anymore. When you have this negative mindset, you are only setting yourself up for failure. You need to take out all the negativity and bring in the positivity. Even if your work does not seem the way you want it, take a step back, doing something else and return. Always, always, always, return with a fresh mind and eyes.

Keep Your Expectations & Goals Realistic

This may be a hard one for many. Most of us have full-time jobs and write on the side. With that and our other daily demands can make it hard on our writing career. You always want to sit down review the goals you set for yourself and change them accordingly to the time, schedule, and demand that you have. Once you found your perfect schedule, stick to it and you will slowly see the rewards it will bring.

Find the Balance

This sort of goes with the above point; finding a perfect balance will help a lot. You want to have time to write and to have time for yourself. Without having any “me” time, you are essentially always on the go. When you are always on the go, it causes stress, fatigue, and bad moods. You want to avoid this at all costs. You want some time to recharge and feel like you are human.

Good Night’s Sleep

You don’t know how many writers I have spoken to, who say they don’t sleep or they sleep very little. Are you crazy? Sleep is very much needed, no matter what profession you are in. Getting a good night’s sleep helps you recharge and gets you going for your next day of work.

Before you get career burnout, you will need to take control of your life. Make a schedule, set goals that can be easily attainable, focus on what is good in life and not the bad, and most importantly take care of you. There is no reason why you should feel burnt out when you are doing something that you love the most.

Question: What do you do when you are in your rut?

SEO: Keyword Edition

We’ve talked so much about how keywords play a huge part with SEO, but we never went too much into detail. As we already discussed in our previous posts, it all begins when you type your keywords into the search engine. As you know, keyword research is very important when it comes to SEO. Finding the right keywords can either make you or break you. By examining your market’s keyword demand, you will learn what keywords are the best, which ones will target paying customers, and even learn about your potential customers. This is not entirely about getting customers to your website, but getting the right kind of customers.

The Value of a Keyword

Yes, keywords do add value to your website, if you take advantage of the right ones. Let’s say you own a writing business, do you make more money using “writing services” or “SEO writing services”? The keywords that your potential customers type into the search bar are usually accessible to webmasters, and research tools are able to locate this information. Sadly, these tools will not show you how worthy it is to gain traffic from those searches. However, to better understand the worth of a keyword, you will need to first understand your own website. This will lead to trial and error.

Long Tail of Keyword Demand

Long-tail keywords are the way to go. As you remember from us talking about them earlier, you can get more searches using them rather than one word keywords. Yes, pretty crazy, huh? However, the thing is with long-tail keywords, you have to kind of narrow down what you are really about. For example, we will use Forever Writing, instead of having “writing services” as a keyword a better one would be “SEO writing services.” This may not bring as many non-active searches as short sweet keywords, but this will bring more interested people looking to purchase.

Now, you are probably wondering where we get all of this useful knowledge from. For starters, we have been in the business for years, and secondly, we also use resources like the following:

  • Google AdWords Keyword Planner Tool
  • Google Trends
  • Microsoft Bing Ads Intelligence
  • Wordtracker’s Free Basic Keyword Demand

I’ll let you in on a little secret; Google AdWords Keyword Planner is our go to tool for SEO keyword research. This nifty tool suggests keywords and even provides us with estimated search volume. If that isn’t cool enough, it also predicts how much it would cost us if we ran a campaign with these keywords.

What are my chances of success?

In order to understand which keywords to use, it is vital to know the demand for the given phrase or term. Also at the same time it won’t happen overnight. This is a slow process, but in the end, if you do it correctly, it will be quite rewarding.

3 Tips for an Enjoyable Life

There is no doubt about it, that people are living a lot longer these days. Sadly, life still is pretty short when you think of everything you need to get done on a daily basis. You know how that is working, kids, more work, more children, but that is how life is for most of us. Needless to say, life is only as fun as you make it. Of course, there will be serious times where you will need to work hard towards your goals, but there will also be times where you need to take a well-deserved break and enjoy your life you are living. Here are three tips for getting the most out of life, no matter how bold you are:

Learn Something New

Many people think learning something new is going bungee jumping, skydiving, or climbing Mt. Everest for enjoyment. However, that isn’t necessarily true, unless you are into those things, you don’t have to do them. Take time out of your hectic day to learn something new. It doesn’t matter if you want to learn how to be a better cook, learn to write, or even garden. Whatever brings you joy in your life, that is exactly what you should do.

Enjoy the Little Things in Life

We tend to go through our life fast pace without stopping occasionally to take in our surrounds. You will be surprised with how many little things we truly missed. We are so caught up with getting from point A to point B that we don’t take a walk through the park, visit the library, or better yet take a relaxing family vacation. We truly need to stop rushing through life and do these little things that we don’t realize we are missing. You will be surprised at how much more enjoyable life can be when you take things slow.

Meet Someone New

Many people have social anxiety. With the internet it makes interactions a lot easier. However, sometimes you need those face to face interactions. It is vital to get out into the real world. It is easier than ever to connect with people who have the same interests that you do. Try some meetup groups, head down to your local library and see what classes they offer that might interest you, best of all volunteer in your community.

Of course, there are more than just three ways to enjoy life, but these three tips will help you lead a more enjoyable life. Always remember to take time to learn something new, stop and smell the roses, and get out there and meet new people. You will be surprised with how good you feel with yourself, with just implementing these three things into your life.

Forever Writing Team Q&A

Lately here at Forever Writing, we tend to get a lot of questions that we think she would address. Some of them you might be asking yourself when you see our ad, see our promotions, and just in general. I compiled a list of questions that we have received in the last month and provided answers for them.

What do you write?

We get asked this by almost everyone that wants a quote. Our answer is, we can write on any niche. We write website content, blog posts, newsletter content, news articles, press releases, and even video scripts. Yes, we can write about anything and everything under the sun.

What is your price?

We say to email us, so we can give you a quote on your project. Not every project will be the same; which is they we do assess the project before we give you a quote. Let’s say your project is to write a simple blog post, something that doesn’t take much research at all. Your project might only be $10 compared to someone who wants an in-depth blog post with more research. See why we do it by project?

Do you offer packages?

As you can see from our previous answer, we do it by project, however, we are in the works of offering packages. They are not set in stone yet. We are playing around with the numbers, but we can guarantee that if you decide to get a package, you will save money than buying a la carte.

Can you edit this for me?

Yes, this is a very common question we get a lot. At least one in every three people ask this. Yes, we can edit your writing for you. We are not just writers either. Here are Forever Writing, we have a 72 hour turnaround time. We get orders out on a first come, first served basis. Let’s say the person before you is ordering 15 articles, we will make sure we fulfill their order then start working on your order. We do this so all orders are completed at the same time and there is no confusion as to what article belongs to what customer.

However, there will be a fee, if you need your project ASAP. The fee will depend on how big the project is and how fast you need it.

What form of payments do you accept?

We currently accept PayPal, checks, and Dwolla. As our company is rapidly growing, we are looking into accepting credit card payments in the near future.

When do I pay you?

For new clients, your payment is due before service is rendered. This is to protect the company from being scammed. As we build a working relationship with you, you will then be put on either a monthly, weekly, or project invoice set up.

Are there late fees? If so, what are they?

Late fees will be added after the balance is a month old. The late fee charge is 3% of the entire balance. It is not much, but it can add up the longer you wait.

Why is your blog not just about writing?

Well, that wouldn’t be so much fun! Yes, we are indeed a writing company and you will find a lot of helpful tips on our blog about SEO, but we found that our readers and even our writers love to write on a variety of topics. We try to keep our daily posts mainly about writing, but we do like to add in some leisure reading. Not only does it break up the nitty gritty, but also allows our potential customers to see what kind of work and style they will be getting.

There you have it folks! These are just a handful of questions we receive on a daily basis. Of course, you may have some questions for us, which is fine. We are an open book, we want your experience here at Forever Writing to be a pleasant one.

Have a question? Feel free to post in the comments, email, or take to social media!

Writers Guilt

Here at Forever Writing, we do not only work with business owners; we also work with a variety of writers. Most of the time, they come to us because they feel guilty of writing too much for what little money they get. We all know that feeling; at least I do first hand. You get paid a small amount for a piece that could take weeks to write. You start telling yourself why? Why do you keep doing this day in and day out? Does this sound familiar to you? Whether if you are a writer or not, rest assured you are not alone in this journey; just about every writer, even a business owner feels this way at least once in their career.  Luckily, there is great news, you can learn to overcome that horrible feeling and discover the rewards of writing.

For some, thinking of writing as your calling can ease the guilt. No one can feel guilty about spending time doing something that they’re destined to do. If you are supposed to be writing, then write. Go ahead, don’t worry about the time it takes you to complete a project. Writing is more than a paycheck to some, writing is knowledge, a creative outlet, and can bring tremendous joy.

Making a list of long-term and even short-term goals can be helpful no matter what you do in life. A perfect example of a short-term goal is perfecting grammar. While on the other hand, a long-term goal could be finishing a book. The main point of this is, by making a list of both long-term and short-term goals and working through the list, you will be able to notice that there will be no wasted time. With each item you cross off your list, you should be proud of yourself for your accomplishments. Once you finish the first list, start making a second one, which should keep the guilt away.

Don’t be scared to tell people that you are a writer. If you are anything like me, your work has appeared throughout the internet.  So, my question to you is why would you spend so many hours trying to be a writer when you already are? You are a writer; why try to keep it a big secret. You should be proud that you are a writer, if someone doesn’t like that you are a writer, so be it.

I know a lot of writers that think just because they are a writer; they are not as productive as the next person. Sadly, that is wrong, Wasting Time Survey conducted a study by Salary.com, a typical employee will spend about 1.7 hours a day on nonproductive activities, including surfing the net, taking long breaks, and socializing. Now, you are probably asking what makes you different? For starters, writers usually don’t have coworkers to distract us. Besides not having coworkers, the process to write takes time, which means we tend to make good use of every hour in our day. In hindsight, it doesn’t matter if it takes us hours to construct a perfect paragraph, because we are being productive. When you compare yourself against the typical employee, you have no reason whatsoever to feel guilty.

One last thing, remember how your teachers would always say “persistence pays off?” It definitely applies to writers too. Not only will all your hard work and dedication make you a stronger writer, but you will also be gifted with respect and confidence; which in return will increase your chances tremendously becoming successfully published over and over again. Now it is time to get rid of all your guilt and get back to your production work. It is officially time to write your heart out!

6 Vital Questions to Ask Your SEO Expert

SEO experts know that staying a step ahead of all the Google algorithm updates is not an easy feat. Which means, what type of SEO expert is the one you are thinking about contracting with; are they a vet, or are they the “quick fix” kind of “expert.” To get a better understanding of what kind of SEO expert they truly are, here are a few questions to help find the bad eggs from the good eggs.

Facebook, Twitter, RSS, Blogger, Pinterest, Forever writing

Source: mkhmarketing/Flickr

1. Is content important?

First is first, content is important. Don’t be fooled by those who say quantity over quality is better. In order to rank high, you need to have high-quality content. This also means if they provide content that has keyword stuffing and adding random links; they don’t work either. The only thing that will work is high-quality content.

2. How do you keep up with Google updates?

We all know this new internet age is unique and different than marketing 10 years ago. The best way to increase your page rank is by having high-quality content, which gets distributed and read. However, another route an SEO expert will tell you paid sponsored content. Your sponsored content will bring more customers to your site, increase your business awareness, and page rank. However, you should only work with respected content organizations because if you do not, Google will reprimand and delete any publisher that does not reveal sponsored content properly.

3. How fast can you generate links?

Now this question is one of those tricky questions. Poor SEO experts will brag about illegitimate ways to build artificial links. You do not want that at all. If they have a plan, Google a few methods they are talking about. The better, more knowledgeable SEO experts will explain to you that there is not an easy or fast way to build links, which is true. You have to remember Walmart was not built overnight now.

4. What is quality content?

It is vital to have quality content along with quality links. Search engines reward those who get quality content from links. Now, all the old link building methods are obsolete, and search engines will only reward those with trusted sources for information.

5. Do you use a link-building service?

A word to the wise, link-building businesses should have gone out of business a few years ago. With that being said, if you decide to use a link-building service, you may find yourself out of business too.

6. What are some fast and easy fixes?

Did your parents ever tell you, “If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is?” Well, that is how it works in this business too. If your SEO expert says they can get you an overabundance of Twitter, Facebook, Google + followers within 24-48 hours, it is time to end the interview. I will tell you right now, that is bogus. They may be able to get you a few active followers, but not many within that time frame. However, the best way to get followers and more interest in your business is to gain your links organically. Your quality content is a big part of the SEO process and important for link-building. Just remember, a great piece of content is 10 times more likely to be shared on social media than a crappy piece.

Your Book’s Website Is Useless without Basic SEO

The SEO world is constantly changing. The process is pretty simple. You can hire a SEO expert, which can help you get the maximum benefit out of your campaign, or you can implement a few easy tips.

Search engine have bots to do their dirty work. Their bots crawl all pages of your website. Now you are probably thinking what does this mean for you? Well, for starters, if they cannot easily read any or all elements of your page, then you screwed yourself over. Yes, you screwed yourself over pretty bad. Your website needs to be easy to read. The bots need to know what you are all about. All this means for you, is to make sure you read up on the best practices of building a website, so you do not have to worry about this major hiccup.

I will say this tip is probably one of the most important steps when you are creating your campaign. You have to choose keywords or a string of keywords that are relevant to your book, if not; there is a strong possibility that you will be penalized by Google. You do not want to be penalized by Google, because your rankings and search result statuses will plummet.

However, here are two free tools I recommend in helping you with this important tip:

Google Keyword Planner (GKP)

Master Suggest

Anchor Text

For those of you don’t know, anchor text either a word or even a group of words that you use for a link. Do not underestimate this, because it is one of the most powerful tools that you have. When you are linking to your book’s website, think about the correlation of the words you are using and the URL of your link. This will be a great source of information when it comes to that keyword.

Free Webmaster Tools

Many small business owners don’t know that Google and Bing provide you with free webmaster tools. You can use these resources to directly interact with search engine’s view on your website.

With Google, once you set your site on these resources, their bots will start to crawl your site. In case you have any hiccups along the way, they will notify you. This will help you solve these issues, fast and effectively. Also, you should subscribe to their alerts, so you are always in the know.

Balance the quality and quantity

Search engines don’t care if you have time or not to work on your website. All search engines care about is how often you post content, how great it is, and how interesting it is for your audience.

Name your images

Pictures are always a great asset to post to post to your website. Did you put alt text on your images? If you answered no, then it is about time you get into the habit of doing so. The bots you that crawl your website won’t understand your pretty images, so you will need to give them the information on what the picture is all about.

Links, links, links

You need to create more backlines from authoritative sites. Google will give you much more credit if you have a many quality backlinks. They consider website more relevant compared to others. Basically, there will be a higher chance that you will rank higher for your search query.
