Think Outside the Box

Have you noticed when we have a story idea, we tend to focus on very quickly as to which part of the story to tell and how we will tell it? Most of the time there will be a much more interesting and even fresher version out of sight, waiting to be found by our creative minds.

For example, we will use the idea of a comedy-drama in which two sisters fall in love with the same man and both them try to win his heart and it escalates until the one sister ends up kill the other over this man.

The first idea that ends up popping into each of our heads is to write the story in chronological order– they meet, fall in love, and the slaying.

While that could be an interesting story and all, it is worth thinking about other aspects of the story and other ways to tell it.

One way to start out the story could be having the police respond to calls reporting the murder, where we see that one of the sisters are dead, but don’t know which one, and then flash back to how it all began.

Another way you can start the story is to start in the future. You can set the story to start a couple years in the future and a have the one sister tell a recollection of what had happened. This can make it really interesting, not only to you, but to your readers.

Of course, there are other ways to start your story, but it is ultimately up to you to decide how you will structure it. Next time an idea pops into your head generate several different alternatives to your story and pick the one you like most.

6 Tips to Keep Your Work-life in Balance

Have you ever felt that you are overwhelmed by the amount of work that you need to get done? Do you feel that it becomes a strenuous effort for you to even show up at work? If you answered yes to both questions, it seems you are having a work-life imbalance issue.  Unfortunately, it is quite easy in this day an age for you to get burned out through stress and anxiety. Luckily for you, there are many ways for you to bring back your work-life balance. Just check out these helpful tips.

Adhere to your schedule

For many people working involves working at home. Now, if you have never worked at home, then you really don’t understand that many of us work 24/7. We are always checking email, making phone calls, writing, and trying to secure new clients. I am not saying that those you that do not work from home don’t work 24/7, but you are not in the same environment like us. You get to transition to your home life and leave your work life behind for the day.

However, making sure that you work within your work schedule can be the best thing you do. If you are always extending your work, this is a first time that there is an imbalance. When working longer you are exposing yourself to more stress, which can potentially be harmful to you. That is why it is best to work a solid eight hours. Of course, you can always work less, if you wish, but the maximum should be eight hours. Once the work time is over, leave work behind. This is your time to relax and do what pleases you.

Put some down time in your schedule

How many of us have free time? Probably not many of us these days. We are so caught up in our work and I bet most of us work 24/7, which is not good for us at all. Next time you plan your week plan a day off. I mean a real day off, which means spending time with your family and/or children, go out and see the world. During this free day you should not do anything that has to do with work. Work will always be there the next day, so don’t worry about the emails, phone calls, and all the other things racing in your head because this is your day and you will go out and enjoy it to the fullest.

Don’t fall in love with adrenaline

We all know that adrenaline will keep your behind moving, but the extra energy will always tempt you into working longer. If you remember from earlier, working longer equals stress. We do not need the stress, correct? Aren’t we trying to get rid of all the stress that work and life can cause?

This is why you should keep your adrenaline levels stable because if not it can lead to depression, inability to relax, and even sleeping problems. Basically, in order for you to have a good work-life balance you need to keep your adrenaline levels in check.

Ask for other’s help

It is 100% ok to ask for others help. Sometimes we think we can handle so much, but in reality we cannot. We freak out once we see how much we really have to do. Asking for help can ease the tension. It will benefit you tremendously and you will see the results almost instantly.

Just say NO

As freelancers and independent contractors, we all know that it is either feast or famine. There is never a perfect balance. When the feast time comes along we tend to take everything that we can get because we know the famine time will be right around the corner.

Did you know it is okay to decline? I don’t mean to deny every job, but decline the jobs that don’t interest you, pay too little, stressful jobs, and ones that you believe will take a long time to complete.

Keep your Smartphone away

Whether you work from home or work in an office, we are all attached to our Smartphones. Don’t our employers know that we have lives to live too? Do they understand that we are not workaholics? The short answer is no. If they have important news they will email each and every one of us to tell us! Half the time we really do not care about this news because it usually doesn’t pertain to us. This is why once you get off of work don’t look at your work email. Forget about work because work will always be there in the morning. Once you step foot out of the door tell yourself that you are officially off of work and you will see it tomorrow.

3 Steps to a New You

New Year, new changes, right? For most, the New Year will come with taking out the bad and bringing in the good. For those of you that wants to begin the year with a new you, do you know how? Here are three easy things you can do this very moment to prepare yourself for a new you in 2014!

Question

You have probably been around toddlers and young children who question every single thing you do or say, right? Many of us can’t wait until they stop questioning us about every little thing; I am sorry to tell you this, but questioning everything is the first step to a new you. I don’t mean go around and ask your significant other, “Why is the sky blue?” I mean questioning your life, how you are living it, where you are going with it.

Examples:

Will going to college really help me with what I really want to do in life?

Why am I so unhappy with my job?

What can I do to make my life more exciting?

De-clutter

Next step to achieving a new you is, de-cluttering. I can bet about 80% of you reading this is surrounded by clutter and I bet 95% of you are looking at the clutter on your desk.

Clutter equals bad. The more cluttered you are, the harder it will be for you to get out of your current state and into a new one. My goal for you is to take a look around at all your clutter (ladies that means beyond your desk!) and ask yourself can you live without it? Do you absolutely need it? When was the last time you even used it? If it is still in the original packing, then put it in your “get rid of ASAP box.”

Passionate

We all have things that we are passionate about. I don’t want to hear that you are not passionate about anything because I know you are. Now take out a piece of paper or open up a word document and jot down everything that you are passionate about. I don’t care how big or little your list is just write everything down.

Now take a look through your list and imagine what you could do with each of your passions you wrote down. Again, this will be different for everyone, but you catch my drift. Now write yet another list down of what you will do with your passions.

Now that you are questioning your life, you are clear of all clutter, and you have a list of what you truly want to do; I dare you to start working on your list of passions. Take time out of your busy schedule to do something you enjoy. You deserve this time and owe it to yourself.  You will soon see your mood change within the first couple of days.

New Changes for Forever Writing

Forever writing, logo

It has been four days into the New Year. I hope everyone is off to a great start; however, I have some changes I will be making in the upcoming year.

  • Our blog aside from having writing related articles will now feature some non-writing related articles, or as I call it leisure reading. That does not mean we won’t have some great tips on writing, but we want to incorporate some fun little articles here and there.
  • I now will require you to use our rates page to order your packages.  Don’t see a package that will fit your budget or needs? Feel free to drop me a line at sales@foreverwritingcompany.com.

These are the main two changes that will be affecting Forever Writing at this moment. However, as the company grows more changes may come and we will keep you informed.

Why we write?

I think it is completely safe to say that there are more writers now than there was at any other time in history. The amount of creative writing programs at various universities have expanded from about 50 or so back in the 1980s to over 300 in the United States alone!! Let’s not even mention the 110 million blogs.

I knew I should have gone into a different field because this is a lot of competition.

But did you stop and think about why all of us are writing? Why do we come into the writing field when there is a lot of competition and society’s attention span is decreasing by the minute?

I believe we write for four main reasons:

We write to be fully alive.

Many of us write to share our memories and fantasies. Don’t you have those dreams that are so vivid and when you wake up you can easily write a story about what happen? That is what a lot of us do. We may not all write fiction, but those of us that do keeps everyone alive with their words.

You may not think your writing is wonderful or have any meaning, but the person reading it may think it is the best thing since sliced bread. With more writers now than ever before can be a good thing because we will get more points of views, more stories, more memories, more reasons to live.

We write to make a name for ourselves.

At least once in our life we wanted to be famous, but as we age, we wonder why? We like the aspect of people knowing us, maybe not the person, us, but the name. We want people to read this great book, blog, article, or website, and say, “Hey, Amanda is such a great writer. I love her work.”

I think we crave for people to praise us, that is why we want to make a name for ourselves. We want our internet identity to be somewhat popular because we have all this knowledge to share and we want at least one person to hear it.

We write to change the world.

Our elders always said that you cannot change anyone, but we can change the world. That never really made sense to me. How can we change the world, but not someone? However, most of us are stubborn and think we can do just about everything and that includes changing the world, which is not always a bad thing; especially in writing.

We write to discover meaning.

meaning, life, forever writing, writing services

This can go two ways; we can write because we are trying to discover our meaning or a meaning through writing. I can see both sides of this, to be honest. I discovered my meaning and lots of meanings through writing. It is quite a great experience to finally have a meaning.

Next time you sit down and start writing think about why you write. It may be for other reasons not mentioned above, but when it all boils down we all have different reasons why we write.

Question:

Why do you write?

Wait… You’re a Copywriter or a Copyrighter?

I love when I get asked, “What is a copywriter?” Want to know why? People tend to get copyrighter and copywriter confused, unless you are a writer yourself and know the lingo. This can be quite a task to explain it to my non-writing friends, but this can also be a valuable lesson to some.

Now copyrighting is the process of creative ownership of intellectual material. For instance, an article such as this one or even a book, that assigns a legal penalty for profiting from another’s work. In other words, this work is protected, by law, from plagiarism.

Now, on the other hand, a copywriter is one who writes and edits copy or already written material. Some do this for a living while others dabble in this here and there. Most copywriters will develop content for websites, sales letters, articles, books, and other entertainment. You need to sell a service? Hiring a copywriter will be beneficial to you.

Even though I own Forever Writing I still call myself a freelance copywriter. I honestly do not know why. I guess I like the ring to the name. However, you can find me writing advertisements, websites, product descriptions, and many other things.

SEO Basics: Cakes & Blind Dates Edition

Basic SEO knowledge is fundamental and essential to any business. SEO will help you rank #1 when people are searching for a business like yours.

You are probably asking yourself what exactly are search engines looking for? How can your website be built around SEO so your visitors/customers needs, as well as Google, Bing, and Yahoo is looking for? I bet you the main question on your mind is how can SEO help your business become more profitable?

Well, luckily for you, we have all the answers to what you’ve been wondering all along.

What is SEO?

We have discussed SEO pretty well already. If you haven’t taken a peek, do so here. If you do not have time to take a gander at all of the valuable information, bookmark it!

Now on to the question at hand the goal of SEO is not to cheat or what some people think “game” the search engines, but to work them to your advantage. Yes, this is 100% legal. The purpose of SEO is to:

  • Create a great, exceptional user experience.

  • Tell the search engines what you are all about, so they rank your site around relevant searches and sites.

Website = CAKE!

Cake, SEO, Forever Writing

Okay, you are now wondering why I say website equals cake. Well, let me explain in a moment. A cake is basically made out of icing and tons of sugar and it tastes good, right? Well your website should be just that! No, I don’t mean go purchase a cake theme background either. I mean your links and social media platforms should act as the icing off the cake. As your content and organization of your site should act as the sugar. These few things should make your site into a tasty cake, which consumers will be eating all up!

Search Engines = Blind Date!

blind date, SEO, search engines, Forever writing

Think of when your best friend tries to hook you up with one of their friends. We all have those friends who insist we get out and meet new people and find love, right? Think about what a perfect blind date would be… Well, this is easy, he or she tells you about themselves, what they are truly looking for, and have a great connection with one another. This is very similar to search engines, so in this case treat them as if they are a blind date. You will need to tell the search engine what you are all about, so if you are a plumber, you will want to emphasize on just that and keywords similar to that. However, that does not mean to overuse the word, where it makes reading the content horrid either because you got them to your site you need to impress them with it. If they see a second grader writing skill chances are you are not going to get much business.

This is the basic of the basic SEO. Yes, it may not look like nothing, but this is gold, treat it that way. If you are looking for more SEO knowledge check out here this will be of use to you.
